The cost of owning a pet \u2014 from vet visits and food to basic supplies has grown significantly.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li data-start=\"808\" data-end=\"992\">\r\n<p data-start=\"810\" data-end=\"992\">For many, the breaking point comes when they can no longer afford housing that allows animals. Cheaper rentals often have\u00a0<strong data-start=\"932\" data-end=\"952\">pet restrictions<\/strong>, forcing painful decisions on families.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li data-start=\"994\" data-end=\"1228\">\r\n<p data-start=\"996\" data-end=\"1228\">At Ruff Start Rescue in Minnesota, owner surrender applications have climbed to\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1076\" data-end=\"1095\">1,496 this year<\/strong>, up from 1,292 in the same period last year. On some days, they receive\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1168\" data-end=\"1197\">more than 20 applications<\/strong>, many involving multiple pets.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li data-start=\"1230\" data-end=\"1444\">\r\n<p data-start=\"1232\" data-end=\"1444\"><strong data-start=\"1232\" data-end=\"1247\">Larger dogs<\/strong>\u00a0are especially affected. They require more food, often face breed restrictions, and their medical care is costlier. As a result, there\u2019s a\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1410\">shortage of fosters<\/strong>\u00a0willing or able to care for them.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li data-start=\"1446\" data-end=\"1742\">\r\n<p data-start=\"1448\" data-end=\"1742\">Shelters in major cities are overwhelmed. In\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1493\" data-end=\"1510\">New York City<\/strong>, Animal Care Centers reached \u201c<strong data-start=\"1541\" data-end=\"1562\">critical capacity<\/strong>\u201d in July and stopped accepting owner surrenders. In\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1615\" data-end=\"1626\">Chicago<\/strong>, animal intake rose to an average of 56 per day in May, up from 54 in April, putting serious pressure on resources.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li data-start=\"1744\" data-end=\"1963\">\r\n<p data-start=\"1746\" data-end=\"1963\">Cesar Perea of the American Humane Society calls this a\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1802\" data-end=\"1821\">\u201cperfect storm\u201d<\/strong>: economic instability, a vet shortage, stricter rental policies post-pandemic, and pandemic pets with behavioral challenges due to isolation.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li data-start=\"1965\" data-end=\"2215\">\r\n<p data-start=\"1967\" data-end=\"2215\">In\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1970\" data-end=\"1992\">Los Angeles County<\/strong>, a growing number of animals are being surrendered due to\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2051\" data-end=\"2087\">immigration-related deportations<\/strong>. Animal control is working to offer support\u00a0 including food and medical care\u00a0 to help keep pets in their homes when possible.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p data-start=\"2222\" data-end=\"2253\"><strong data-start=\"2222\" data-end=\"2251\">How to help or get help<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul data-start=\"2254\" data-end=\"2774\" data-is-only-node=\"\" data-is-last-node=\"\">\r\n \t<li data-start=\"2254\" data-end=\"2419\">\r\n<p data-start=\"2256\" data-end=\"2419\">If you\u2019re struggling, reach out\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2288\" data-end=\"2298\">before<\/strong>\u00a0it becomes an emergency. Shelters and rescues may offer free food, vet care, training, and short-term fostering options.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li data-start=\"2421\" data-end=\"2602\">\r\n<p data-start=\"2423\" data-end=\"2602\"><strong data-start=\"2423\" data-end=\"2449\">Never abandon your pet<\/strong>. Try rehoming with someone you trust, but vet them carefully.
